2023 Pete Metzger Scholarship
The inaugural Pete Metzger Scholarship was awarded to Ms. Leah Bracknell, a tenor saxophone student at Princeton High School.
In the award announcement, it was noted that Ms. Bracknell and the Sycamore Community Band have made music together! When Matthews Auditorium served as the site of our Gala Concert in December of 2021, we were thrilled to have the PHS Symphonic Band to join us for the second half. She and her classmates sat in with us while Mrs. Kristen Brown and Mr. Metzger directed a combined band of 120 musicians! Not only did Ms Bracknell win the scholarship named after Mr. Metzger, she can say, “I worked with him!” That’s something we’re all very proud to say, and we hope she is too. Ms. Bracknell will begin the next phase of her education studying Music Education at Miami University in the fall. Before she leaves, we’ve invited her to join us one more time, as a musician in one of our summer concerts. |

The Sycamore Community Band is grateful to Kristen Brown, the Princeton City Schools Music Department, and the Board of Education for hosting our rehearsals and concerts during 2021 and 2022.
Each year, the Sycamore Community Band awards a scholarship to a local student musician or school Music Department. Encouraging schools and individual students to continue making music is one way that we give back to our local communities. This year, we’re pleased to announce that the Sycamore Community Band scholarship will now be known as “The Pete Metzger Scholarship”, named after our founder, who, during his long and storied career, was a great influence to music and musicians throughout greater Cincinnati. The Sycamore Community Band is excited to announce that the Pete Metzger Scholarship will be awarded to a Princeton graduating senior, to be selected in the spring by the Princeton Music Department, who will be making music part of their continuing education plan. This $1,000 one-time scholarship will be awarded at Princeton’s High School spring concerts. |
Scholarship Award Recipients over the years
In the year 2000, the Band decided to award a student scholarship to commemorate our 25th Anniversary. This marked the beginning of our annual donation program. The purpose of the annual donation is to provide support to expand the appreciation of instrumental music among students as well as to further the education of students in instrumental music. As a long time active Community Band in the Cincinnati Metro area, we believe that by supporting the musical appreciation & education of our young people, we will help ensure a pool of future members and audiences for the SCB and other Bands in the area for years to come. Recipients in the past have been scholarships to numerous students, support for school programs, support for music therapy organizations and support for programs to supply instruments to children who otherwise could not afford them.
